STEAM is an educational approach to learning that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to guide the learning process. The end results are innovative students who problem solve, take calculated risks, think critically and creatively, engage in experiential learning, and work collaboratively. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century! Students are introduced to this multidisciplinary approach in Transitional Kindergarten, and each year thereafter, are exposed to increasingly complex concepts and ideas.
7 Principles for Effective STEAM learning
SCCS utilizes the following principles for effective STEAM learning.
1. STEAM lessons focus on real-world issues and problems.
2. STEAM lessons are guided by the engineering design process.
3. STEAM lessons immerse students in hands-on inquiry and open-ended exploration.
4. STEAM lessons involve students in productive teamwork.
5. STEAM lessons apply rigorous math and science content.
6. STEAM lessons involve creativity and artistic production.
7. STEAM lessons allow for multiple right answers and reframe failure as a necessary part of learning.
Projects and Creativity
Solving highly complex problems requires that students have both fundamental skills (reading, writing, and math) and 21st century skills (teamwork, problem solving, research gathering, time management, information synthesizing, technology, presentation). With this combination of skills, students become directors and managers of their learning process, guided and mentored by a skilled teacher. SCCS embraces this model through two educational philosophies and approaches:
Project Based Learning
This instructional method crosses subject matter and allows students to learn new concepts and ideas by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to authentic, engaging and complex questions, problems, or challenges.
Enrichment Opportunities allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school—allowing them to create and complete a “passion project” of their choosing. This approach to productivity is used by giants such as Google and it has been said that 50% of Google’s projects have been created during this creative time period!
It is our desire to cultivate curiosity, build upon passions, and encourage exploration through the learning process through Technology, PE, Music, Ukelele, Spanish Enrichment, Off Campus Foundations Fitness, and Art.
Service and Leadership
Service Learning and leadership instruction at San Clemente Christian School is unique in that it is woven into daily instruction, across subject matter, and throughout the grade levels beginning in Transitional Kindergarten. Our service learning and leadership program is based upon four cornerstone ideas which comprise our P.A.C.E model.

It is our goal to provide life-changing experiences that ultimately inspire students to become great leaders and critical thinkers while seeking positive change in their environment. Grade leveled service learning projects are introduced throughout the elementary and upper school years along with family mission trips to local sites and Mexico. This is an exciting process for our students as they realize their impact and expand their breadth of knowledge about the world outside the walls of our school.
